The Fiat Strada has been redesigned with new engines and body revisions for the Strada Working 1.4 and the Strada Life 1.4 models. The addition of the extended cab, the Strada X-Space, makes up the all-new three-model Strada range, which is imported to South Africa from Brazil. This hardy and affordable range of Fiat bakkies has carved out a popular spot for itself at the top of the local light-commercial market.

The Fiat Strada 1.4 Working is equipped with a standard 1.4-litre engine that produces 60kW at 5 500rpm and 120Nm of torque at 2 250rpm. All Fiat Strada vehicles are fitted with standard, economic five-speed manual gearboxes. The biggest appeal in this entry level Strada 1.4 bakkie is its value for money as, although it’s a utilitarian vehicle designed for work in the field, it has features that make the cabin incredibly comfortable. These include power steering, tinted windows, grab handles and a load box liner with securing hooks as well as ample interior storage pockets in the door and glove compartments. Central locking and an immobiliser create a layer of security, while a third stop light increases safety in heavy traffic and emergency braking conditions.
The upper-model Fiat Strada Life is fitted with a few extras on top of the standard power steering, central locking, tinted windows, rev counter, tough load box liner and standard functional fittings that are to be found in the base Strada 1.4. These include air-conditioning, electric windows, a high-quality CD player and smart 14-inch alloy rims. A brand new low-hanging instrument cluster, which includes an electronic odometer, along with an ergonomically designed gear knob and handbrake lever, makes travelling in the Fiat Strada a comfortable experience. The rear load bay is spacious and is able to accommodate an excess of 700kg, which is a heavier load than any other 1.4-litre bakkie currently on the market is able to transport. A sliding rear window in a heavy black protective frame provides access between the loading bay and the cabin compartment in the Strada Life.
Dubbed the “work and lifestyle” bakkies new to the market in 2010, these Fiat Strada cars are affordable, while presenting a range of features and capabilities that suit South Africans. Rugged, and yet efficient and comfortable, the Fiat Strada is, in the words of Oscar Rivoli, Managing Director of Fiat Group Automobile, “revitalised”.
The biggest appeal in the flagship Fiat Strada X-Space Adventure is its extended cabin, which allows for the packing of valuable items such as clothing, sports kits and documents, behind the passenger seats. Comparable in size with a small car’s boot, the Strada Adventure extension gives owners the option of placing small luggage in the secure cabin, which is lockable via key-operated central locking and protected by a Fiat Code immobiliser device. The box’s width and length is not greatly reduced by the Strada X-Space cab extension, and its load capacity is a mere 15kg less than the Life and Working models.
Fitted with luxury interior features that include air-conditioning, electric tinted windows, a CD-stereo and an optional sunroof, this Fiat Strada pick-up has attractive silver dashboard accents, a driver’s airbag and durable Adventure seat cloth. Strada X-Space exterior features include colour-coded door handles and mouldings, front and rear fog lamps and a tailgate handle with an integrated X-Space badge.
The loading area is accessible as a result of the Strada Adventure bakkie’s low profile, but also because its easy release tailgate folds flat to support a weight of 300kg. A non-slip load-box liner extends over the tailgate and is secured in place by hooks positioned around the edges and on the floor of the box with which drivers can securely fasten the liner without encountering obstruction. While the rear is supported by rigid parabolic leaf spring-suspension, the central part of the Strada Adventure bakkie is raised to enable it to negotiate difficult terrain without damaging delicate internal components.
Available in the Working, Life and X-Space Adventure models, the Fiat Strada is a popular light commercial vehicle – or small pick-up bakkie – ideal for cargo hauling and racing around the farm, where its rigid suspension and ample cargo hold are clear benefits. Available in the base Working model, upper Life model, and the flagship X-Space Adventure model - which is longer in the cabin and fitted with additional exterior appointments - the Fiat Strada is at home in a variety of environments.
